A New South Wales address that sits closer to Adelaide

The postcode says New South Wales; the map argues otherwise. Broken Hill is 511 kilometres north-east of Adelaide and 1,143 kilometres west of Sydney, and 2880 is a New South Wales number however far it looks from the coast. South Broken Hill, Broken Hill North and Broken Hill West share it with Silverton, Stephens Creek, Mount Gipps, Little Topar, Euriowie, Kinalung, Tibooburra and Cameron Corner, where three state borders meet.

The City of Broken Hill runs the urban area, while Silverton and Tibooburra fall under the Unincorporated Far West Region instead. Menindee, south-east on the Darling, is 2879 and sits in Central Darling Shire, so it is not a 2880 address at all.

Note the clock first: the far west keeps ACST rather than eastern time, which is worth allowing for if you plan to ring on the day it lands. Mining still employs people here, with the Rasp Mine working silver, lead and zinc through about 118 employees and contractors and Perilya operating alongside it. Broken Hill Base Hospital, a 98-bed rural teaching hospital with emergency, maternity, surgery and cancer care, and the flying doctor base that has run since 1936 fill out most of a typical list.

Beyond the city, 2880 stretches further than any label suggests. Silverton is 26 kilometres out and Tibooburra is 335, neither of them inside the city boundary, and Cameron Corner carries 2880 on the New South Wales side and 4492 on the Queensland one.
