Two towns are called Emerald, and we pack near the other one
The Victorian Emerald is about 44 km south-east of Melbourne's CBD on postcode 3782, split between Cardinia Shire and the Yarra Ranges, and from where we pack it is the one a careless address finds first. Write QLD and 4720 when you mean the Central Highlands town. That Emerald is where the Central Highlands Regional Council has its headquarters, and the same council takes in Blackwater on 4717, Capella on 4723 about 52 km north, and Springsure on 4722 about 68 km south.
One more name has changed. On 17 April 2020 the locality of The Gemfields was replaced by three separate localities, Rubyvale, Sapphire Central and Anakie Siding, all on 4702 roughly 62 km west, so an old address book entry now names a place that no longer exists.
A service centre for farms, mines and everyone who drives in
Emerald is the major service centre for the region's agricultural and mining industries, so the recipient is often someone who lives an hour out and works in town. Emerald Hospital is the referral hospital for primary health care centres across the Central Highlands, which means its staff and its patients come from well beyond 4720, and the CQUniversity campus on the Capricorn Highway brings in its own share again.
